Our Mission
The Salem Jazz and Soul Festival is a 501(c)3 non-profit
organization that produces free concerts for the public and
raises money to support music education programs.
Building on Salem’s Music History
The Salem Jazz and Soul Festival is recreating and
renewing the vibrant jazz scene that began at the Salem
Willows in the 1920s, when Duke Ellington and other
musicians from the Big Band era played at the seaside park
in Massachusetts. The festival will build on this rich jazz
history — adding soul, blues and funk to the mix — by
offering a series of annual free concerts to the public,
concluding with a festival each year at the Salem Willows.
The festival will spotlight the wealth of talented musicians on
Boston’s North Shore, and has already attracted thousands
of music fans and extensive media coverage during its first
few years of operation.
Supporting Music Education Programs
In addition to allowing us to produce free music events for
the public, proceeds from the festival benefit music
education programs on the North Shore of Massachusetts.
During our inaugural festival season in 2007, we donated
$2,500 to music education programs at Salem High School.
In 2008, we more than doubled that amount, donating
$6,000 to the Salem Public Schools and the Plummer Home
for Boys. In 2009, despite a tough fundraising climate, we
were able to raise $6,000 which was donated to the Salem
High School, STARR Access Program, Salem Academy
Charter School and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater
Salem. A further $1,000 has been earmarked to hire
professional musicians to teach master classes in local
schools.

Members of the committee who organized this year’s Salem Jazz and Soul Festival held on Saturday & Sunday, Aug. 21 & 22 at the Salem Willows
want to extend our gratitude to the Salem and North Shore music lovers who made this year’s festival such an outstanding success. Every year we
are amazed at the enthusiasm and support our programs generate as we strive to bring outstanding musical programs to this area while supporting
music education.
There are so many people who help to make The Salem Jazz and Soul Festival an ongoing success. These include: the musicians, performers and
volunteers, the city agencies and elected officials, especially Salem Mayor, Kimberly Driscoll and State Rep. John Keenan for addressing our
audience during the Festival, and of course all of the more than 2000 jazz and soul fans who came out this weekend to enjoy the music despite the
rains on Sunday.
We would like to thank all those who generously donated to our cause, most especially our major corporate sponsors that include: Taché Real
Estate, Salem Five, Ipswich Ale, The Lobster Shanty, Creative Catering, Cabot Money Management, The Berklee College of Music, Zip Car, Scullers
Jazz Club and the Salem Trolley.
Again, thanks to our performers, our audiences, sponsors, and the City of Salem for your continued trust and support. We look forward to seeing
everyone at our final event of the year on October 2, 2010 featuring the Boston Horns.
