2018 SJSF/Berklee Summer Series at Derby Square

 

     

This series of free concerts runs from May through August and takes place outdoors on Derby Square (24 Front St., Salem, Mass.) from 5 to 7 p m. on the second Saturday of each month. Sponsored by Berklee College of Music and our generous sponsors (see below), the series showcases up and coming talent from Berklee. Come on out and enjoy some wonderful live music!

May 12, 2018  5-7 p.m.

Aman Sagar 

Aman Sagar is a Singer-Songwriter/Guitarist/Producer who grew up in the North of India. Being exposed to a confluence of Eastern and Western cultures from a young age, he found his outlet in music and taught himself the guitar. At 18, he moved to New Delhi to pursue a degree in English Literature and study music formally on the side. He quickly became a regular session player in the circuit and toured across the country with a variety of bands and artists. In the summer of 2016, Aman was awarded the A R Rahman Scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music and he is currently pursuing a degree in Electronic Production and Design.
Aman describes his music as being rooted in the rich tradition of Rhythm and Blues, but branching out to contemporary pop and electronic music. “I have always been an admirer of a musician’s ability to connect to a group of  people at an emotional level and move them in a way that inspires them. To sustain a reciprocal relationship of personal thought with an audience through music is as close to a superpower as it gets.  And so I strive to engage people from all walks of life into reaching out to their subconscious and vocalizing their thoughts through my music.” He Plans to record his debut album in the summer of 2018.

Hunter Lamar

Hunter LaMar,was born in Newark, NJ to a College Professor Father and a Broadway Veteran Mother. With experience from Hip Hop, Gospel, R&B, and Classical music he left the Tri-State area to pursue a career in music academia at the Berklee College of Music. With the Trap Music Orchestra he has opened for Nas & Michael Christmas and with the J Dilla ensemble he’s opened for Talib Kweli. In the summer of 2017 LaMar was a featured guest at Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco accompanying popular LA based Producer and DJ “Dwilly”   LaMar has performed on 3 continents and is a recent graduate of the Berklee College of Music. LaMar describes himself as an “R&B Sad boi” He is currently a lead vocalist in the Wedding Band Silver Arrow and is working on his debut solo project “Danny Tanner.” His music can be found on all major streaming platforms.

Miette Hope

Miette Hope is a 21 year old singer-songwriter from Colorado Springs attending her final year at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA as the first ever Vans off the Wall Presidential Scholar. She grew up in Colorado Springs, CO and began her musical journey at the age of 7, when she started studying piano. She has been writing songs since the age of ten, after taking up the guitar and started playing live in her mom’s folk band singing back up harmonies by the age of 11. Since moving to Boston, she has performed and collaborated and recorded with local bands, Aüva, Maddie Jay and the PH Collective. Aüva performed at the  Berklee/Vanyaland  SXSW event in Austin, TX, opened for Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys at the New Hampshire Pavilion and has played many venues around MA.

Jas and Chums

Afro-beat inspired grooves blended with jazz influenced harmony and contagious horn lines backing the refreshing take on African vocal harmonies forms the sound of Boston-based band Jas & Chums. Formed of an international collective of musicians from around the globe such as, Belgium, Israel, US and UK, Jas & Chums is led by the drummer and composer, Jas Kayser, from the UK.

Jas Kayser moved to Boston when she was 18 years old to study Contemporary Writing and Production at Berklee College of Music. Now she is continuing her studies at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute for a master’s degree in Contemporary Performance.

Jas is an active musician in Boston, New York and London. With the help of top class musicians as mentors such as Ralph Peterson, Neal Smith and Terri Lyne Carrington she has played with various bands and artists like Jacques Schwartz-Bart, Ralph Peterson, Luciana Souza and Donald Harrison at venues such as Scullers Jazz Club, Ryle’s Jazz Club, Wally’s Café and Rockwood Music Hall etc. She has also represented Berklee at the Panama Jazz Festival 2018 with the BGJI sextet, the Next Gen Monterey Jazz Festival 2018 with Ethan Santos Quintet and currently preparing to perform and teach at the Newport Jazz Festival Summer Camp.

Summer 2018 will see Jas & Chums release her first single ‘Stupid on the Beat’ Feat. Niu Raza. The project, called ‘Jafro Beat’, explores the common ground between progressive jazz, and soulful, afro-beat led rhythms and is set to cement her credentials as one of the leading forces behind the resurgence of jazz-influenced sounds in the UK and US
