September 2009
Dear Prospective Sponsor,
In 2009, the third annual Salem Jazz and Soul Festival took place. We held a sold out fundraiser in April,
staged four free musical performances in conjunction with Berklee College of Music in historic Derby
Square, featured another two free performances as part of our Downtown Showcase series and
concluded the season with the main event, the 2-day Salem Jazz and Soul Festival. The weekend
featured 12 hours of live music, a VIP area, crafts by local artisans — all on the Salem Willows' beautiful
shoreline.
The festival also featured a display of Salem's long history with jazz, spotlighting the Salem Willows
Casino's former Charleshurst Ballroom, and paying tribute to the place where internationally known big
bands such as Duke Ellington played from the 1920s to 1950s. Our Kids Tent provided a place for
children and their parents to explore musical instruments, connect with local music educators, and have
fun with arts and crafts - it also provided a great view to hula hoop demonstrations by the Boston Hoop
Troop. Festival-goers were also invited to participate in series of Music Education events, featuring
lessons from skilled musicians and dancers.
In addition to allowing us to provide free music performances to the public, proceeds from the festival
benefit music education programs on the North Shore of Massachusetts. During our inaugural Festival
season in 2007, we donated $2,500 to music education programs at Salem High School. In 2008, we
more than doubled that amount, donating $6,000 to the Salem Public Schools and the Plummer Home for
Boys’ music initiatives. We are in the process of determining the 2009 donation, but expect to exceed our
past efforts, despite a difficult fundraising economy in 2009. We are a federally recognized non-profit
organization, so donations to the festival are tax deductible.
We're committed to expanding our donations to music education programs and bringing together the
Salem community and its visitors with free music. Please help us continue to reach our goals. Any
donation - big or small - will directly help our cause.
Please contact us about supporting the Festival at sponsors@salemjazzsoul.com. Our 2010 Sponsor
information kit will be posted soon. If you would like to receive a notification when it's updated, please

Sincerely,
The Fundraising Committee of the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival
